BNP Paribas announces today that it is committing 100 million Yen (1.2 million US dollars or 885,000 euros) to the Japanese Red Cross for near-term relief and recovery efforts in Japan. In addition, two of BNP Paribas subsidiaries, BNP Paribas Assurance and Bank of the West, have respectively pledged to donate 50 million yen (600,000 US dollars or 442,500 euros) and 15 million yen (200,000 US dollars and 140,000 euros). Globally, the BNP Paribas Group will contribute for 165 million yen to Japan relief effort. Furthermore, the Group is encouraging its employees around the world to contribute to the relief efforts through a donation matching programme.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Japan and with our 900 employees based in Tokyo” said Baudouin Prot, CEO of BNP Paribas. “On behalf of our 200,000 employees we want to express our sympathy and join the relief efforts. We are an important bank in Japan, committed to our clients, and play a significant role in the Japanese financial markets which are essential in maintaining a functioning economy. We are keen to be part of the impressive relief efforts of this courageous nation to overcome the consequences of the tragedy which struck a few days ago.”
In Portugal, a BNP Paribas Portugal specific account has been set up so that all employees can donate to this cause. The account will last for 10 days, from March 21st to March 31st.
After the 31st, the total amount will be transferred to the Portuguese Red Cross’ account.
